Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Drink)

Agua de Jamaica is a refreshing Mexican drink made from dried hibiscus flowers, known for its vibrant red color, tart flavor, and natural tangy-sweet taste. It’s served chilled and is perfect for hot days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers (flor de jamaica)
  • 8 cups water, divided
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Ice cubes, for serving
  • Lime slices (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the dried hibiscus flowers under cold water to remove any dust.
  2. In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
  3. Add the hibiscus flowers to the boiling water and simmer for 5–7 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let the mixture steep for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Strain the liquid into a pitcher, discarding the flowers.
  6. Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher.
  7. Stir in sugar until fully dissolved, adjusting sweetness to taste.
  8. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  9. Serve over ice and garnish with lime slices if desired.

Notes

  • You can reuse the hibiscus flowers to make a lighter second batch.
  • For a tangier flavor, add a splash of lime juice.
  • Adjust sugar to preference; some prefer it more tart.
