Apple & Pear Compote

A warm and comforting fruit compote made with apples and pears, lightly spiced and perfect for breakfast, dessert, or as a topping.

Ingredients

  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 pears, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine chopped apples and pears with water and lemon juice.
  2. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract (if using).
  3. Stir well to combine, then bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  4. Cover and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fruit is soft and starts to break down.
  5. Use a fork or potato masher to mash the fruit to desired consistency.
  6. Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled.

Notes

  • Adjust sugar to taste depending on the sweetness of the fruit.
  • Great as a topping for yogurt, pancakes, or oatmeal.
  • Can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.
