A whimsical and beautifully decorated Butterfly Garden Cake perfect for spring or garden-themed celebrations, featuring layers of moist cake, creamy frosting, and butterfly and flower decorations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Buttercream frosting (various pastel colors)
  • Edible butterfly decorations
  • Edible flowers or fondant flowers
  • Food coloring (gel, various colors)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely.
  8. Level the cake layers if necessary. Spread a layer of buttercream between the layers and stack them.
  9. Apply a crumb coat and refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes.
  10. Decorate the cake with pastel-colored buttercream, using piping tips to create garden effects.
  11. Add edible butterfly and flower decorations to complete the butterfly garden theme.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for more vibrant frosting colors.
  • You can use a boxed cake mix for convenience, but homemade gives the best flavor.
  • Decorate just before serving for the freshest look.
