Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce (brown sugar bourbon flavored preferred)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup bourbon (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken breasts or thighs in the bottom of the crock pot.
  2. In a bowl, mix together barbecue sauce, brown sugar, bourbon (if using), Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Pour the sauce mixture over the chicken, making sure it is well coated.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 6–7 hours or on high for 3–4 hours, until the chicken is tender and fully cooked.
  5. Remove chicken and shred with two forks.
  6. Return shredded chicken to the sauce in the crock pot and stir to coat.
  7. Serve hot on buns, in wraps, or over rice.

Notes

  • You can substitute apple juice for bourbon if desired.
  • For extra flavor, add sliced onions before cooking.
  • This recipe works well with boneless chicken thighs for juicier meat.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
