- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup black cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water or hot coffee
- 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter (for buttercream)
- 5 cups powdered sugar (for buttercream)
- 3/4 cup black cocoa powder (for buttercream)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (for buttercream)
- Edible gold leaf or gold dust (for decoration)
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 8-inch round cake pans. Line the bottoms with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, black cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
- Slowly pour in hot water or coffee and mix until fully combined. Batter will be thin.
- Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- To make the buttercream, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and black cocoa powder.
- Add heavy cream as needed to reach desired consistency. Beat until fluffy and smooth.
- Assemble cake by layering chocolate cake and black cocoa buttercream. Frost the outside and smooth with a spatula.
- Apply edible gold leaf or gold dust for decoration as desired. Chill before serving for best results.

- Using hot coffee instead of water enhances the chocolate flavor.
- Chill the cake before applying gold leaf for easier handling.
