Mozzarella Sticks

Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, mozzarella sticks are a popular appetizer made from breaded and deep-fried mozzarella cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 mozzarella cheese sticks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Marinara sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut mozzarella sticks in half, making 24 pieces.
  2. Set up a breading station with three bowls: flour in the first, beaten eggs with milk in the second, and breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper in the third.
  3. Dredge each mozzarella stick in flour, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat in breadcrumbs. For extra crispiness, repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps for a second coating.
  4. Place the breaded sticks on a tray and freeze for at least 1 hour to prevent cheese from oozing during frying.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry mozzarella sticks in batches for 1–2 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve hot with marinara sauce.

Notes

  • Freezing the mozzarella sticks is crucial to keep the cheese from melting too quickly while frying.
  • Double coating helps achieve extra crunch.
  • You can bake or air fry them as a healthier alternative.
