Mussels Marinara

Mussels Marinara is a classic Italian seafood dish featuring fresh mussels cooked in a rich, garlicky tomato sauce with herbs and white wine.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds fresh mussels, scrubbed and debearded
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • Cooked pasta or crusty bread, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add garlic and onion, sauté until softened and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Stir in crushed red pepper flakes (if using), then add the crushed tomatoes, white wine, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Simmer the sauce uncovered for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add the cleaned mussels to the pot, cover, and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until all mussels have opened. Discard any that do not open.
  6. Stir in chopped parsley and remove from heat.
  7. Serve hot over pasta or with crusty bread for dipping.

Notes

  • Be sure to discard any mussels that do not open during cooking.
  • You can substitute white wine with seafood stock or water if desired.
  • Fresh herbs like basil can be added for extra flavor.
