- 4 large egg whites, at room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Preheat the oven to 200°F (93°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a clean, dry mixing bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on medium speed until foamy.
- Add the cream of tartar and continue beating until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating on high speed until stiff, glossy peaks form and the sugar is fully dissolved.
- Mix in the vanilla extract, if using.
- Transfer the meringue to a piping bag fitted with a round tip.
- Pipe bone shapes onto the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 1.5 hours, then turn off the oven and let the meringues sit inside for another hour to dry out completely.
- Remove from oven and let cool completely before serving or storing.

- Make sure the mixing bowl and beaters are completely clean and free from grease for best results.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
