Tar Heel Pie

Tar Heel Pie is a rich, decadent Southern dessert made with a gooey chocolate filling, crunchy pecans, and a buttery crust—similar to a chocolate pecan pie but with a brownie-like center.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter, melted chocolate, and sugar until well combined.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract and salt.
  4. Fold in flour until just combined.
  5. Stir in chopped pecans and chocolate chips.
  6. Pour the batter into the unbaked pie crust and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the center is set and a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs.
  8. Let the pie cool slightly before serving warm with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • This pie is best served slightly warm to enjoy its gooey texture.
  • Can be made a day ahead and reheated gently before serving.
  • Use quality chocolate for a richer flavor.
